MWAOM Teaching Excellence Award
The MWAOM invites nominations for the MWAOM Teaching Excellence Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to business education among Academy members.
This award honors educators who demonstrate distinction in teaching effectiveness, innovation in business pedagogy, meaningful student mentorship, and sustained contributions to student development. The award reflects the conference’s commitment to advancing high-quality, impactful business education across institutions and disciplines.
Award Criteria
1. Teaching Excellence
The nominee demonstrates consistently high-quality, student-centered pedagogy that supports meaningful learning outcomes in business education.
Evidence may include:
- Course materials (e.g., syllabi, assignments, learning objectives) that reflect thoughtful instructional design.
- Student or colleague feedback or summary evaluation data indicating strong teaching effectiveness.
- Prior teaching awards or recognitions at the institutional, regional, or national level.
- Testimonials from students or colleagues.
Reviewers will consider both the quality and consistency of instructional performance.
2. Innovation in Business Education
The nominee has advanced teaching practice in meaningful and forward-looking ways that enhance student learning and engagement.
Evidence may include:
- Development of new courses, certificates, or experiential learning programs.
- Publication or presentation of pedagogical research, instructional case studies, or presentations focused on teaching innovation or SoTL scholarship.
Innovation may occur at the course, program, or disciplinary level and should demonstrate clear educational value.
3. Student Mentorship & Development
The nominee significantly contributes to students’ professional growth and development beyond the classroom.
Evidence may include:
- Career mentorship and networking facilitation within management or business academic contexts.
- Support for underrepresented students, demonstrated through testimonials or documented initiatives.
- Sponsorship or advising of student organizations, competitions, or professional development activities.
- Mentorship of early-career faculty in areas related to pedagogy and teaching.
- Evidence of student success or achievement (e.g., grades, projects, or academic progress)
Reviewers will assess the scope and impact of mentorship efforts.
4. Sustained Impact & Continuous Improvement
The nominee demonstrates ongoing commitment to excellence and reflective improvement in teaching practice.
Evidence may include:
- A longitudinal record of strong teaching performance.
- Clear examples of incorporating feedback to enhance instructional effectiveness.
- Participation in faculty development activities related to pedagogy at all levels.
- Mentorship of junior faculty in teaching methods or instructional design.
Sustained impact reflects not only consistency, but growth, adaptability, and contribution to a broader culture of teaching excellence.
Nomination Materials (Streamlined Process)
To reduce burden on nominators, submissions are limited to the following:
- Nomination Statement (maximum 1,000 words)
Addressing the four award criteria and describing the nominee’s contributions and impact. - Current Curriculum Vitae or Professional Profile
Publicly available CV, institutional webpage, or LinkedIn profile is acceptable. - Optional Supporting Evidence (maximum two items)
Examples may include:- Public teaching awards
- Published instructional cases or pedagogical articles
- Conference presentations on teaching
- Sample syllabi
- Brief testimonial excerpt (student/s or colleague/s)
Student evaluation summaries or internal institutional data are not required.
Selection Process
The Board will set the nomination deadline and select the committee, comprising of 3 Board members, during the MWAOM Mid-year meeting. Following the nomination deadline, eligible submissions will be reviewed by a Teaching Award Review Committee; the committee should include the Program Chair.
Committee members will independently evaluate nominees using the established scoring rubric and identify top candidates based on the strength of documented impact and alignment with the award criteria.
The committee will then meet to deliberate and select a recipient by majority vote, forwarding its recommendation to the Conference Board. The recipient will be notified at least six weeks before the annual conference and asked to attend the conference for recognition during the event.
